Banner weight is the most overlooked parameter in outdoor work and the one that generates the most complaints. With cheap banner the problem is never print quality — failure almost always starts around the eyelet. This article covers what weight actually means and which job blockout and mesh banner solve.
What does the weight figure actually tell you?
Weight in gsm indirectly describes the density of the reinforcing scrim and the thickness of the coating. Higher weight means better resistance to stretching under wind load. A banner rarely tears in the middle; it tears from the edge of the eyelet hole, because that is where load concentrates.
440 gsm European banner is a practical floor for outdoor use. Lighter grades are fine indoors and for short-term use, but may not survive a first season on an exposed facade.
Blockout: stopping light and image bleed
Standard banner transmits some light. That becomes a problem in two situations:
- Double-sided hanging: the artwork behind shows faintly through and the two designs merge.
- In front of a window: daylight from behind washes the print out.
Both are solved by blockout banner with a black core. The black layer stops light completely and makes the two faces independent.
Mesh: letting the wind through
On scaffolding, stadium fencing and large facades the real enemy is wind. A solid banner at that scale acts as a sail and either tears or stresses the structure it is tied to. Mesh banner is perforated so air passes through, which is why it is standard on high-rise facades.
The trade-off is visual density: perforation makes colours read slightly lighter than on solid banner. Preparing artwork a touch more saturated is a good habit.
Backlit work is its own category
In a lightbox the point is to transmit light, so you use backlit vinyl rather than banner. If a frameless, seamless surface is wanted, SEG lightbox fabric gives a more modern result, and being removable and washable helps over a long installation life.

Common practice is one every 50 cm. On exposed facades, dropping to 30-40 cm noticeably reduces tear risk.
Does mesh print look washed out?
It reads slightly lighter because of the perforation. Preparing artwork more saturated, or choosing darker backgrounds, balances it.
Can blockout banner be printed on one side only?
Yes. Blockout exists to stop light transmission; single-sided printing is common, especially for window applications.
